A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure which may involve the removal of fat and excess skin in the abdomen(stomach). The procedure also helps tighten the stomach muscles which gives the appearance of a vastly improved abdomen.
Tummy tuck – is an abdominoplasty right for me?
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is not something that is suitable for people wishing to lose weight, in fact in most cases, after a consultation, if you are overweight we would not recommend a tummy tuck. Patients who have gone through weight loss or feel that their skin has not shrunk back after pregnancy are most likely to benefit from an abdominoplasty especially if they feel self-conscious about what their abdomen looks like.
Whatever your circumstances a thorough consultation will be needed and this information will be given to the surgeon who will carry out a detailed assessment before deciding if tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty is suitable for you. Every case is different and will be treated so.
If, after careful consideration and consultation with yourself, we decide that a tummy tuck is suitable for you the operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes between two and five hours. There are several techniques used in an abdominoplasty if the patient has a lot of excess skin a full abdominoplasty may be suitable, this involves the surgeon making a curved cut from one hip to the other, this allows the surgeon to remove any excess fat and skin. Once all of this is removed the surgeon will cut under the skin above your umbilicus (belly button), pulling it downwards and tightening it. Sometimes they will need to reconstruct your umbilicus and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.
Where there is little excess skin a mini tummy tuck is a preferred technique where the surgeon will need to make a small cut just above the pubic area to remove the excess skin. Where there is no excess skin and the patient only needs to have the muscles tightened an Endoscopic abdominoplasty – is suitable, for this a small cut will be made and the surgeon will use special surgical instruments to tighten the muscles.
Tummy tuck – before and aftercare
If a full abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure has taken place the patient can normally go home after 2 to 3 days. You will be given the necessary post-operative pain killers. You may have dressings or even drains. The drains area usually removed before you leave hospital. It is not unusual, in fact, most patients are mobile from day one and return to normal activities (not including heavy exercise) within six weeks. Returning to work will need to be discussed with the aftercare team and the surgeon, as everyone heals differently. What you will see is a gradual improvement over the first six months as long as you keep to a healthy weight and exercise regularly.
